Freedom and Me
By Jeff Guidry
Freedom came to me as a baby eagle with two broken wings. She couldn’t stand, her left wing was broken in four places, she was emaciated and covered in lice. We had to tube feed her for weeks.
She was my baby.
I used to sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes.
After six weeks, the decision was made to euthanize her if she couldn’t stand. She was going to be put down on Friday.
When I walked in everyone was grinning from ear to ear. There she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle! I was just about in tears. I was diagnosed with lymphoma (one major organ plus everywhere) and wound up doing eight months of chemo. Lost hair, the whole bit. Freedom would come to me in my dreams and help me fight. This happened time and time again.
Freedom and I went to the top of a hill. She wrapped both her wings around me, touched my nose with her beak, and stared into my eyes, and we just stood there.
I later met a guy who was terminal, and I let him hold her. His knees just about buckled, and he swore he could feel her power course through his body. I have many stories like that.
A small request… All you are asked is to keep this circulating. Even if it’s only to one more person.
